When one goes for sushi (which this particular one does with some frequency), the sad reality is that most of the time the beer selection is extremely limited. Sapporo is a common option, but it just ain’t a great one.
This beer is classified as a Rice Lager, which means that rice is used in addition to barley in the grain mix during the brewing process. Typically, using rice provides the beer with a light, clean taste and a dry finish.
Let’s just call a spade a spade. If you ever hear people talking about a beer that “tastes like water!”, it’s likely a beer not dissimilar to Sapporo. It’s fine paired with sushi, because the flavour is just so minimal that it doesn’t overwhelm what you’re eating. But I struggle to imagine a situation where I would drink this beer on its own. I enjoy crisp, refreshing pilsners on certain occasions, so I’m not immediately averse to beers with less complex flavour profiles – I AM, however, averse to beers that just taste like nothing at all and Sapporo is one of them.
Oh well, at least the sushi was delicious.
